Asian American Expo

I’ve been really busy recently with work and preparing for Benjamin’s arrival and haven’t gotten out much but this weekend we went to the Asian American Expo, a large fair with hundreds of vendors and tens of thousands of curious Asians looking for a fun outing and a good deal.

After paying $10 to park our car, we got onto the tram that would take us from the parking lot to the entrance of the expo.  The tram ride reminded me of Universal Studios.

There were 4 halls of exhibitors, advertising everything from pho broth to massage tables to mops.  I was interested in buying some cosmetics but when the vendors started pitching false eyelashes that were crossed (kind of looked like spider webs) and whitening masques to me, it reminded me of the cultural gap between Asian Americans and the Fobby Asians.  I did get a good deal on two cute purses for $30.

Performances were located at the end of each hall and on an outside stage.  There were preteens doing a provocative hip hop dance, taekwondo groups, samba dancers, C-pop singers, Michael Jackson impersonators, Japanese taiko drummers and everything in between.

One of the most unique performances were put on by a group of color coordinated women for a church.  They did line-dance style dances to religious music.

Of course, every fair needs some good food.  There were dozens of food vendors at this one and the most popular items were lamb kebobs and boba.

All in all, we had a fulfilling afternoon of shopping, eating, and exploring.
